Flooded Basement-A Major Issue to Consider

I grew up in a house with a basement that flooded on a regular basis, the result of a drain just outside the basement door that was always clogging up. With a few trees around our home, it was very difficult to keep the drain open, and the basement water headache never fully went away.

If you have a home with a basement, be of good cheer; 98% of basements will suffer some form of water damage at some point in their existence. As you know basements are low lying areas by their very nature, hence such areas are prime targets for water to accumulate.

So how do you defend your home against this sort of problem? I actually believe that you start early on, making your best defense a good offense, and taking a useful action before things start getting damp.

Experts say that a waterproof basement is probably not realistic; however you can make regular inspections, looking for some cracks in your foundational wall, broken window seals, and leaky pipes...anything that might let water in. On the outside area, it is good to check and make sure all drainage vents, gutters, and downspouts are unclogged and working properly, and check to see if your surrounding landscape is sloped away from your home. Truly speaking, improper landscape slope can send water flowing the wrong way very quickly.

In addition to it, you can protect what is in your basement. Basements usually tend to be storage spaces, and as such, a lot of family possessions can be kept there. Try to find some way of elevating them, keeping them off the floor, either by using shelving or blocks. For your concern, it only takes an inch or so of water to cause thousands of dollars in damages. You have numerable options, you can try to deal with everything yourself or you can contact a company that specializes in dealing with flooded basement services.
